The Mind's Obsession

2 A.M. at the Cat’s Pajamas~ Marie-Helene Bertino

2 A.M. at the Cat’s Pajamas is a novel about a little girl, a young school teacher, and a middle aged bar owner. It’s a riveting story about the troubles of this telling world. Madeleine Altimari is a nine year old aspiring jazz singer. Her mother has just recently passed away, and Madeleine is quite lost. Sarina Greene is a young fifth grade teacher, who had recently had her heart broken. Lorca is the owner of legendary jazz club, the Cat’s Pajamas. He barely has enough money to keep the club going, and his wife has left him. Three completely unrelated people find themselves not so different at all.

I finished this book in 3 days, I could barely put it down. The way the author writes, and her characters are compelling. I loved the character of Madeleine, and unfortunately reminds me of how I was when I was nine years old. I definitely recommend this to anybody, and is certainly worth the read.

Bloodlines Series~Richelle Mead

bloodlinesBloodlines Series is a spinoff series to Vampire Academy.

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, but she is no longer completely trusted since helping Dhampir, Rose Hathaway. With the new Moroi queen in place, it is imperative her only living relative is well protected. Jill Mastrano is leaving the comfort of her home to go and live with the humans in secret. With her Dhampir guardian, Eddie Castile, and her royal Moroi friend Adrian Ivashkov, they relocate. For Sydney’s whole life she was told that the vampire race were unnatural creatures of evil, but as she continues to get to know them, she wonders if the alchemists could have been wrong.

This is based a couple months after Vampire Academy ended. And holy crap, it was fantastic. If you have already vampire academy, and love Adrian, then here is a present. It was really awesome, you get to know Adrian a lot better then you did in vampire academy. He was my favorite character in both series, and was completely psyched that this series came out. It is pretty important to read Vampire Academy, before you read Bloodlines. It is a definite read, and a fantastic continuation of the world Mead created in vampire academy.

Boy Meets Depression~ Kevin Breel

boy meets depression This is a memoir of Kevin Breel’s complicated meeting with depression. Being raised in a hard home, going to cruel schools, with cruel students. This is the story of how one boy nearly hits rock bottom, and then drags himself off the ground and keeps going.

I read and finished this book in two days. But, it felt like longer. When I started reading i didn’t really know how it was going to end, and by the end everything was clear. Normally a book about true events, and depression is not really my thing, but this book caught my eye. I was very happy with the book, and will definitely read it again.

I’m a sophomore in high school, and I know how bad people can be. Lets just say that at one point or another, everyone sucks. People who say they have never bullied anyone, or mistreated anyone are either liars, or too naive to see they aren’t pure, innocent souls. I could really relate to the author, in ways that were actually kind of amazing.

If I can make a suggestion that whoever decides to read this, finish the book and then google the author. It made a whole lot of difference to me to see how he turned out and even what he looks like. For someone who hasn’t cried in a while, pick this book up.

The Vampire Academy Series~ Richelle Mead

All_the_VA_books  This is a six book series, about good vampire, evil vampires, and half vampires, and some other stuff.

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a half human half vampire creature. Her best friend is Lissa Dragomir, A royal Moroi and the last Dragomir in her family. Two years ago, they ran away, to protect themselves from the danger coming their way.The Strigoi want her dead, to wipe out one of the twelve royal families. Now, they have been found, and are forced to  return to St. Vladimir’s Academy. As they slowly get back into life at the academy, Rose is now training with the ever constant, Dimitri. Dimitri Belikov, is an extremely well-known guardian, and also just happens to be extremely gorgeous, and forbidden to Rose. Meanwhile, people are targeting to hurt Lissa, and she can’t be left alone. But,  when she is she goes up to the top floor of the church. Here she finds peace, and Christian Ozera. He is an outcast, because his parents consciously became Strigoi, the though of immortality too strong. As they both try to get back into normal life, they are ulterior motives in the midst, and no one is safe.

This series was really good. All six books kept me completely intrigued, and now I’m reading the spin-off series bloodlines( definitely check out, especially if you love Adrian.) My favorite characters were Dimitri, Christian, and Adrian, though he doesn’t come in until book 2. Thinking up a book about vampires is pretty easy, but the author straight up created an entire world. I just finished the series about a week ago, and just started bloodlines which is in the point of view of Sydney Sage, who we meet later. When i finished it i was slightly disappointed about the endings for some of the character, but don’t be discouraged they are all in bloodlines.

  1. Vampire Academy
  2. Frostbite
  3. Shadow Kiss
  4. Blood Promise
  5. Spirit Bound
  6. Last Sacrifice

The Kanin Chronicles~ Amanda Hocking

This is a series based of the same world of the Trylle. If you haven’t read Trylle, read it first. It is technically a separate series, but features some characters from Trylle.

There are five tribes among the trolls: The Omte, The Skojare, The Kanin, The Vittra, and the Trylle. This series is about the Kanin. The average Kanin person has earth features. Dark hair, and dark eyes. Bryn Aven doesn’t fit in with her blond hair, and blue eyes. Bryn is half Skojare, and she has never been accepted for it. She has spent most of her life training to become a member of the kings elite guard. When she was fifteen, someone attempted to kill her father, Konstantin Black. Now Bryn is nineteen, Konstantin is a wanted fugitive, and Bryn still seeks revenge.  When her Boss, Ridley Dresden, whom she is becoming all the more fond of, gives he a new assignment in Chicago. She sets off to track the young Kanin, but maybe Konstantin isn’t as far away as they always thought.

  1. Frostfire
  2. Ice Kissed
  3. Crystal Kingdom

This was a very good trilogy, that I will probably read again. I loved the character of Konstantin, and how nobody truly knows who he really is. I was ecstatic when they put characters from Trylle into the series, which just made it so much better for me. This series was not as good as the Trylle, by far, but it is definitely worth the read for an Amanda Hocking fan.

Freedom’s Child~ Jax Miller

 freedoms child

This is the first free book I’ve gotten in exchange for a review, and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. Join Blogging for Books to get free books, in exchange for a review, and you can keep the book.

Freedom Oliver lives in a small Oregon town, with more secrets than any diary. She keeps mostly to herself, but is also known as the town drunk. She works at a Biker bar, and gets picked up for drunkenness often. They all just think she is a fearless woman, who drinks a lot. But, nobody knows that Freedom Oliver is a fake name. They don’t know she was arrested for killing her husband, a cop, twenty long years ago. They don’t know she gave up her two kids for adoption. They don’t know she is in witness protection. They don’t know how she aches for her children every minute of everyday. When she finds out her daughter has gone missing, she jumps on a motorcycle and leaves for Kentucky. Her past comes at her like a wave, she people who adopted her children, may not be as good as everyone thought, and her husband’s family seeks revenge.

I loved this book, I loved almost everything about it. The  character of Freedom Oliver is extremely strong, and able to take care of herself. I loved the way she would be the strongest person around, and still be the gentle mother missing her children. I also really like the characters of Mattley, Mason, and Peter. Mattley is a cop, and one of the few people who cares about Freedom. Mason is Freedom’s son, and a big corporate lawyer dude. Peter is one of Freedom’s ex husband’s brothers, one only decent one actually. The only thing I disliked about the story is the fate of all the Delaney’s. Through out the entire story they are all a big deal, and their fate seems really light. The three brothers just randomly at the Paul’s, and then boom, boom, boom. And with Lynn, That was completely unexpected, and I think it could have been different with her. I think the entire concept of the story is awesome, and I really did love the book, and would read it again.

Beastly~ Alex Flinn

beastly-4Kyle Kingsbury used to be the boy who you wish you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. Kyle was a cocky, arrogant, egotistical jerk who made fun of anyone not at his “level”. Well, lets just say with this particular girl, he made a big mistake getting in her way. Kendra is a witch, and she was set on getting revenge. She got it. Kendra turned Kyle into a hideous monster, and how could anyone love a monster? Kyle has disappeared from everyone he used to know, except his father who set him away. Stupid jerk, you don’t do that to your own kid. Kyle had one year to break the spell, and get someone to love him the way he looks now. As of recent, Kyle has changed his name to Adrian, which means dark. When a man breaks into his greenhouse, Adrian threatens the man. In return, the man must send his daughter to live with Adrian until he decides to let her go. This is it, this is his chance to change his fate, if only Lindy could not hate him and leave her room once in a while. Okay, so maybe this won’t go according to Adrian’s plan.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I watched the movie, before i decided to read the book. I loved the movie, and I thought the book would be much better and it was. One of the main things I hated the most, was in the book Kyle changed his name to Adrian, and in the movie he changed his name to Hunter. That was an adjustment, but I got over it quick. Something else than made me want to kill someone, was hoe different they made Lindy look in the book and the movie. I really liked the character of Kendra, in the book and the movie, she is just a really cool chick. I would recommend reading the book before watching the movie, if possible.

There is also another book with the story told for Lindy’s point of view.

The Mortal Instruments Series~ Cassandra Clare

mortal instrumentsWhen fifteen year old Clary Fray goes to the Pandemonium club with her best friend Simon, she was not expecting to witness a murder. And definitely not a murder committed by three teenagers with weird tattoos and bizarre weapons. Then the “person” they killed vanishes into thin air, what the fudge? It’s kind of hard to call the police when you’re the only one who can see them, and since there is nothing to show anyone was even killed. This is Clary’s first encounter with the Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are warriors who dedicate their lives to rid the world of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks like an angel, but acts like a jerk. When Clary’s mother suddenly disappears, Clary herself is attacked by a demon. Now, Clary has no choice but to trust Jace, he could be the only one who can keep her safe, and help find her mother. As she learns more about the Shadowhunters and their lives, she starts to question everything she has ever known. Why would demons have any interest in ordinary mundanes like her and her mother? How come she can suddenly see the Shadowhunters, and no one else can?

This series is in my absolute top five ever. This is a six book series, but Cassandra Clare has other series about Shadowhunters also. Jace is one of the best characters in any book I have ever read. She has written a full length series about Shadowhunters, wolves, vampires, warlocks, fairies, and unimaginable places and characters. I was never left disappointed, and I spent too much time to mention hugging the books.

1. City of Bones

2. City of Ashes

3. City of Glass

4. City of Fallen Angels

5. City of Lost Souls

6. City of Heavenly Fire.

Divergent Series~ Veronica Roth

Many years after the apocalypse, the society has been divided into five factions. Candor the honest. Amity the peaceful. Erudite the intelligent. Abnegation the selfless. And Dauntless the brave. On an appointed day once a year, all sixteen year olds must select a faction to spend the rest of their lives in. Before they decide they must go through a test, that will tell her where she should go based on her personality, but they can make what ever decision they want. Your only supposed to get one result, but Beatrice Prior gets three. Her result was inconclusive, which makes her different from everyone else, it makes her divergent. Divergents are people who can’t be controlled. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she truly is. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the very competitive initiation, she renames herself Tris, and struggles to live with the choice she has made. All the initiates must go through a series of physical and mental tests. Tris must determine who her true friends are, and where a romance with a seemingly familiar boy fits into the life she has chosen. How can she protect herself. If anyone found out her secret, she would be killed, because she can’t be controlled.

I really loved the books, and the author is truly talented. The movies are also awesome. I love Four so much, he is a huge part of my major book crushes. I severely suggest reading this trilogy. There is also an extra book, with small parts written in For perspective. check that out to.

Hunger Games~ Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is a national televised event where 24 contestants fight to the death to be the victors of Panem. Panem is the new world formed post apocalypse. The Capitol is were all the wealthy people are, and there are 12 poorer districts surrounding the Capitol. Every year two contestants from each district, a male and a female, from ages 13-18 are chosen to compete in the Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favor. When 16-year-old Katniss’ younger sister Prim is chose as the female representative, she volunteers to take her place. Katniss, as the first volunteer of District 12, must now compete in the Hunger Games. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, now much train and prepare to fight. Katniss sees this whole situation as a death sentence, but she has been close to death before, survival is second nature. But there are 23 other  teenagers she has to go through to get back to her family. Many of whom have spent their entire lives training to be the crowning victors of the Hunger Games. Well, this is gonna be fun.

I loved reading these books, and I’m obsessed with the movies. I can’t wait for the last one to come out. These books were an adventure, and i was engrossed from the first page. I love the character of Katniss, and how she does absolutely everything to protect those she love. Including, her mother, her sister Prim, and her best friend Gale. Gale and Katniss have always been close, but he wants things to be more serious. Peeta is just a baker. To everyone in District 12, Peeta is just a baker. But to Katniss, he saved her life. My favorite character is Finnick Odair, but he doesn’t come in until book two. Many people are familiar with this series, but if you aren’t definitely read, watch the movies, and join the revolution!
